The Gower Peninsula offers some of the most breath-taking beaches in the UK, many of which are dog-friendly some or all of the year.

We’ve chosen some of our favourites that you and your pooch will love…

Oxwich Bay Beach on the Gower Peninsula

Oxwich Bay Beach

We may be a little biased, but Oxwich Bay tops our list of dog-friendly beaches on Gower. Comprising a two-and-a-half-mile sandy stretch, it provides the perfect spot to tire out those pooches with seemingly boundless energy, as well as offering a host of appealing qualities to owners as well. The beach is backed by impressive dunes, the thriving Oxwich National Nature Reserve, and easy access to beautiful woodland walks and of course the Wales Coastal Path. Oxwich Bay also won a host of awards including ‘The most beautiful beach in Britain’ (The Travel Magazine), and has been featured as One of The Telegraph’s ‘Great British Coastal Walks’.

Llangennith

Another award-winning beach right on our doorstep is Llangennith – a well-known surf spot located at the northern end of Rhossili Bay. Llangennith welcomes dogs 365 days of the year on all parts of the beach, and, like Oxwich Bay, is expansive enough to offer dogs plenty of room to run and play. There are also several walks going up behind the beach, which run parallel to the sea and along to Rhossili headland. Please note, there may be sections of these inland walks where dogs must be kept on-lead e.g. farmland. There are toilets and a car park situated behind Llangennith beach, reachable by a pleasant walk through the dunes.

Broughton Bay

Around the corner from Llangennith on the north coast of Gower, lies Broughton Bay, another generous expanse of sand that welcomes dogs throughout the year. Up until the mid-19th century, the beach was used to anchor large sailing vessels, but is now popular with treasure hunters due to its tides, which have a tendency to dramatically shift the sand, and, have in past years unearthed a number of fascinating artefacts. Broughton Bay boasts other interesting features including historic caves and the iconic ‘Blue Pool’, however tides can make accessing these dangerous, so always do your research before attempting to reach them.

Caswell Bay

Caswell Bay is a pretty beach at the Mumbles end of Swansea Bay. Flanked by striking cliffs, it’s another favourite surf spot on Gower, but just as popular with walkers thanks to its fascinating rock pools, pretty views and relatively secluded position. There is a seasonal dog ban on the beach, but it’s worth paying a visit outside of these times to enjoy a peaceful stroll across the sand and a hot drink or bite to eat in Surfside Café. Positioned right on the beach, Surfside offers delicious food and welcomes well-behaved dogs, so you can sit with your four-legged friend and enjoy unparalleled views across the bay.

Pwll Du Bay

Situated just along the coast from Caswell Bay is the charming pebbly beach of Pwll Du, once a smuggler’s haven and later a limestone quarry. Dogs are allowed all year round, making it the perfect stop on your dog-friendly trip to Gower. Being one of the peninsula’s more sheltered beaches, it’s best reached on foot via the coastal path from Brandy Cove, or through the Bishopston Valley. Either journey is certainly worth the effort, taking in some of Gower’s most spectacular scenery and ensuring your dog plenty of fresh air and exercise.
